Luisita “Lu” Vega began her candidacy for the school board in 2023. As a foster parent, she has witnessed firsthand the lack of transparency and disparity in Individual Education Plans (IEP), unenforced school policies, bullying, and limited resources for children with special needs. Because the children in her care lack the option of school choice, she has committed to fighting to make Winslow better than she found it.

Early Life and Education: Luisita "Lu" Vega was born and raised in Hoboken, NJ, to devoted Catholic, Puerto Rican parents. Both her parents left school as children to work and support their families, eventually making their way from Puerto Rico to New Jersey to find work and raise their children. Despite growing up poor, Lu and her sister enjoyed a wonderful childhood filled with a loving extended family, great friends, and plenty of laughter. Her parents were acutely aware of the value of a good education and pushed Vega and her sisters to pursue the American dream. Seeing how hard her parents worked to put food on the table, she knew she was going to college, despite the odds stacked against her. She fulfilled that dream, overcoming many setbacks to earn an Associate's degree in Allied Health Science from Air University, Maxwell Air Force Base, AL, a Bachelor's degree in Political Science and a Master's in Public Administration from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, and more recently certification in Cyber Security from New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, New Jersey.

Community Involvement: Lu has been a public servant for all of her adult life, but she would say that what has brought her the most satisfaction was her work in the various communities that she had the pleasure to be a part of. While at Joint Base McGuire Dix Lakehurst, she was volunteer for the Base Community Planning and Improvement Project, served as a Victim Advocate for Victims of Sexual Assault, and she taught CPR and financial literacy. In 2010, she moved to Atco NJ, not being able to have children of her own, Lu became a foster parent. Today, she is one of the strongest advocates for children of Camden County. In addition, Lu works with many veteran causes, a life member of the VFW post 392, and an advocate for the NJ Veterans Deterance Program. Lu is a board of trustee member of the historical society of winslow Township as well as an active parishner at Christ the Redeemer Parish in Atco, where she teaes religious educaition.

Professinal Life and Local Ties: Luisita “Lu” Vega attributes her remarkable work ethic to the example set by her parents. Serving 28 years in the United States Air Force, she retired in 2020 at the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. Those 28 years were the most challenging and rewarding of her life, filled with diverse roles and extensive training. As superintendent of a large medical clinic, Lu honed her skills in Public Health, Bioenvironmental Engineering, Aerospace Medicine, and Medical Management. In 2017, she was nominated for Senior Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year. After retirement, she transitioned to the Veterans Health Administration, working as a Program Coordinator in Behavioral Health, which she believes is the most important work of her life. Her experiences in leadership, teambuilding, and management make her an exceptional school board candidate.
